Venti Lucenti's production
From the opera
Aida by Giuseppe Verdi

Aida was born as a Grand Opéra: grandeur, triumphalism, scenarios with pyramids and sphinxes, military parades, choirs, dances, mass scenes. An imaginary and opulent Egypt that was well suited to an idea of the East 'created' tailored to Westerners. But Verdi, as a man of the theater and exceptional artist, inserted a truer message into the music: Aida can in fact be taken as a paradigm of a broader history of man, a story where the characters no longer know where they are headed. , nor what is the reason that keeps them alive - all of us, Verdi said "we are like exiles who wander blindly to find a reason to live".

150 years after the first performance at the Scala in Milan, in 1872, this year the Progetto all'Opera therefore tackles one of the highest-ranking melodramas in the entire world repertoire. And he does it with the children, with the boys, with the teachers, involving thousands of Florentine families around this production, some of whom, perhaps, have never heard of opera ... And he does so starting from the assumption indicated by Verdi himself: groped to understand through the expressive versatility of music the feelings, passions and anxieties that afflict or exalt young people of all times. Since representing Aida today, so far from the Italian Risorgimento and far from the patriotic ideals that animated the Italic districts in the 19th century, means, above all, returning to its intimate essence, to the beauty of the melodies, to the psychological depth of the characters and to the dramatic development. of the affair. Buildings crumble, civilizations fade, but passions, feelings and human affections, today as long ago, have the great advantage of remaining immutable and restoring the splendor of Aida intact.
